Breakfast time at our house frequently includes laughter and creativity but these pancakes added tasty frivolity.
What a surprise to have alphabet pancakes to spell out monograms, secret messages, and to create shapes.
Here’s the secret: A Squeeze Bottle. These letters have a primitive, early elementary school look about them, but with a thinner tipped bottle I can imagine a delicate font.
Secret #2: Allow the pancakes to cook to about 3/4 of done before flipping. This gives the letter a nice golden brown, plus it insures that they’ll flip without breaking.
Secret #3: Draw the letters backward in the pan. There are some letters (A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y) that can be drawn forward and flipped and look the same. On the other hand, the remainder of the letters are best created by drawing the mirror image in the pan. That way, when the pancake is flipped, the font face has the even golden color. If you compare the two photos above, the M G were drawn forward and the I LOVE YOU was drawn backward. Personally, I prefer the evenness of the second set.
Other shapes we played with:
Square, triangle and oval (which doubled as an Easter Egg).
Pi (math symbol), treble and bass clef
Christmas tree – spread with lingonberries decorative balls.
Heart – both solid and one that wasn’t completely filled in, but given a lace look. I really want to try these again with the thinner tip bottle.
Have fun. Be creative.
~Enjoy!
