Mini pancakes, small omelette, bacon, onion garnish.
Breakfast for lunch is a common bento right now – most mornings I make a mini omelette and put it in Madeleine’s bento. It’s also not uncommon to find one or more of the following: pancakes, bacon, muffins, cereal (Mini Wheats, Cheerios), strawberries (not in season right now), green grapes, mini bagel, nuts (walnuts) granola or homemade granola bars with peanut butter and chocolate chips.
She delights in breakfast at any time of day and I’m happy when I see the empty bento come home (she’s good to save any scraps so that I know what she’s eating). I know that she’s had protein and whole grains which will fuel her body and feed her brain to keep her focused through the afternoon.
I also think that what makes these appealing to her is that they are all finger food size; there’s a novelty to small versions of regular food items that kids (adults, too) enjoy. Packing small foods in the bento also insures that she has a nice variety of foods so that even if there’s one thing in her bento that day that just isn’t to her liking there’s guaranteed to be something else she does.
I’m considering sending a bowl of dry cereal and a spoon and having her pour some of the milk from her thermos on it. She especially likes Mini Wheats and at times will even take a container of them to school for snack time. This could be a new facet to breakfast at lunch.
~Enjoy!
